Companies are even monitoring F-List bloggers like me! What about BestBuy?

Word of Mouth Marketing by Andy Sernovitz

I couldn’t believe it.

In less than an hour after I posted about Dell Computers’ new viral video,, in which I speculated whether JibJab may have done the work, I got a comment posted from Dave Chappell of JibJab stating for the record that they had nothing to do with it.

Then today, less than 24 hours after the post, RichardatDell (presumably from Dell Computers) wrote in and commented on all sorts of nasty comments I’ve made about Dell over the past few months (doing so very tactfully I might add… much more tactful than I was).

I can assure you: there won’t be any more than a handful of people (well maybe a couple of hundred) who will ever see their comments (or ever saw mine), so why even bother?

Probably because one annoyed person can wield a whole lot of influence when they want to. The opposite is true as well. If you doubt that, you need to read Word of Mouth Marketing by Andy Sernovitz (which is on my bedside table as we speak — an excellent book!).

So this is a good sign: companies are starting to take individuals seriously when they say something. They are beginning to understand the power of the spoken (and written) word.

Now if only BestBuy had their radars on last August, when I posted a video about my daughter Ashley’s travails with BestBuy and GeekSquad, she probably wouldn’t be using a Mac today.

Oh BESTBUY! Time to smell the coffee!

Andy –

Your story well illustrates how companies are one-by-one waking up and figuring out the word of mouth philosophy. Dell got hit with some mistakes, and now we’re seeing them really understanding how this all works. Best Buy gets it at the top, and it’s slowly filtering through the rest of the company.

Cheers,

Andy
