The Challenge of Consistently Generating Content

I ran across this post last night which really hit home.

Having started and subsequently dropped the blogs that I was working on so many times over the past few years , I found my own inner excuses being written about for all to see:

You create your blog and suddenly you’ve got a platform for ruminating about all those really good ideas you’ve been shaping in your head for so long. Suddenly there’s a space for venting about those subjects you’re truly passionate about. As a result, it all comes too easy. Words spill from the keyboard like water cascading over Niagra falls. Ideas flow without pain or effort. It’s all too easy.

Then there comes a time, when you realise you’ve pretty much used up your store of really, great thoughts. You sit down at your keyboard and nothing’s there. So you hit your RSS reader, you scour memeorandum, you Digg. You find a couple of memes that you think you can add something to only to find out that bastard blogger you really respect has beaten you to it, and damn he’s done a good job. You start to wonder if these bastards do anything but blog. Don’t they have a day job to occupy their time?

You get really busy at work and next thing you know it’s four days since you last posted. In the meantime, your traffic has crashed through the floor so just to keep your head above water, you resort to linking to a few interesting posts floating about by people who have far too much time on their hands. You’re transformation into mediocre blogger is complete.

I had various motives over the years for doing the blogs that I did: ego, money, pride being chief among them… I’m hoping that my motives this time will carry me further than it did in those previous efforts.

I’m doing this blog partially out of gratitude, a) for the fact that I’m still alive and kicking and have a good life and b) I am very thankful for the blessings that this profession has given me.

Which brings me to my second motive: service. I truly hope that I am being and will continue to be of service to those of you who seek to carve out a niche in online publishing or blogging. I have learned a few things over the years and am continuing to learn as this practice evolves, and I hope to share my learning with you.

When I learn something new, I’m always anxious to share that knowledge with someone I know… which is what motivates me to read the books and eBooks I do and to share that information with you.

One thing that has changed since I launched the site back in November is that I no longer have the desire to review “Get Rich Quick” eBooks. For me, it was becoming like doing a blog on junk food.

One day I’d be sampling the Quarter Pounders at McDonalds, the next day Big Macs from Burger King. You may or may not benefit from hearing about those experiences, but they’re wreaking havoc on my body.

Just as the junk eBooks were wreaking havoc on my mind…

So as I mentioned a couple of posts back , I’ve had to simply dump a few reviews that I had prepared for. They were giving me a severe case of intellectual indigestion.

The reviews I’m preparing now are really good books and eBooks. They feed me, just as I hope they will feed you.

So…. Just wanted to share that with you. Good Lord willing, I’ll continue to share this knowledge and information for a long time, and won’t wear out the way 99% of all bloggers do.

Time to go prepare my next review to be published in the next day or so…

Stay tuned…

Interesting post Andy; I’m going through blog flow now where it all just comes out, but I know it won’t last forever. I know you’ve had your flows and breaks…

I think I do it because I love to do it, not for money. My blog is like my commercial: the only thing I’m selling is my take on reality!

When I started blogging only very recently, my first post mentioned I would blog for exactly this reason. I see this more as a way to stay in touch and share than anything else really.

I wouldn’t sell my blog for all the tea in China, though. I might accept a column if someone thought I write half-decently. I’m lucky I already received the odd comment along these lines (notably from the people behind Blinklist). That is of course motivating at this early a stage.

As with most blogs I discover this way (via Squash this), I’m subscribing to your feed to see if it appeals to me in the long run. I think it works that way, at least for me, because Technorati won’t be of any help in this I’m afraid.

So good luck and thanks for blogging.

That’s very good Andy! Bravo!

But you’ve not been updating the blog for months. Are you still committed to share the best of your knowledge?

I needed that, Patrick…

I’ve been incredibly busy launching my new business, and haven’t updated Bourland.com since August.

I really should, and do plan to. Might not be til January, however.

Stay tuned…
